Preparing for Adulthood
Everything we do at Landon points towards one goal: supporting every young person to lead a happy, full and, as far as possible, independent adult life. Preparing for adulthood does not start at 16 – it starts on a pupil's first day with us.
The four outcomes
Our provision is shaped around the four nationally recognised Preparing for Adulthood outcomes:
- Employment – developing work-related skills, routines and experiences, from classroom responsibilities in Primary through to vocational tasters and work-related learning in Post-16.
- Independent living – building everyday skills such as cooking, dressing, personal care, household tasks, money management and travel, taught explicitly and practised in real settings.
- Community inclusion – learning to use shops, cafés, transport, libraries and leisure facilities confidently, so that our young people are visible, welcome and active members of their communities.
- Good health – understanding one's own body and emotions, developing healthy routines around food, exercise and sleep, and learning to communicate about pain, illness and feelings.
How it works in practice
From Year 9 onwards, every annual review includes a Preparing for Adulthood focus, and we plan transition steps with families, local authorities and, where relevant, adult services. In our Post-16 phase these outcomes become the curriculum itself, with personalised programmes built around each student's aspirations and needs.
Communication and self-regulation – developed through the SCERTS framework across all our pathways – remain the bedrock: they are the skills that make choice, self-advocacy and genuine independence possible.
