British Values
At Landon School we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. For our pupils, these values are not taught as abstract ideas: they are made real, concrete and meaningful through daily routines, carefully planned experiences and our wider SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) curriculum.
Democracy
Pupils experience democracy through making meaningful choices every day – choosing activities, expressing preferences using their individual communication systems, and having their voice heard in decisions about their learning. Pupil voice is central to how we plan and review provision.
The rule of law
Clear, consistent expectations and routines help our pupils understand that rules exist to keep everyone safe. Staff model fairness and consistency, and pupils learn about the people who help us in the community, such as the police, fire service and health professionals.
Individual liberty
We support every pupil to become as independent as possible – to make choices, to self-advocate, and to develop the communication and self-regulation skills that give them genuine control over their own lives. Independence is a thread that runs through every pathway and every phase of the school.
Mutual respect and tolerance
Our community includes pupils, families and staff from a rich range of cultures, faiths and backgrounds. We celebrate festivals and traditions from around the world, learn about similarities and differences, and model respect in every interaction. Pupils learn to share space, take turns and value one another.
British values are woven through our curriculum rather than bolted on, and they form a key part of our Cultural Capital and SMSC provision – see our SMSC page for more detail.
